Five tips for Flying Flu-free
Fall is officially here, which means Winter is just around the corner (is it just me, or is 2019 flying by?). With the change of seasons comes increased travel due to the holidays, and with increased travel comes – you got it: germs! Traveling in close spaces with strangers on planes, trains, buses, and/or cruise ships always puts us at higher risk for spread of germs and sickness – regardless of the season. I’ve had two major occurrences with me and Laila getting sick abroad, and take my word for it, it’s not fun! Check out my five tips to keep you and your kiddo(s) as healthy as possible during your travels.
- Utilize wipes and hand sanitizer while on the go
When I first get on the flight, I like to wipe down the arm rest and tray tables that me and Laila will be touching. Pro tip: Stock up on travel-sized packs of disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer (available at any major retailer) to slip in your carry-on, they take up minimal space and can always be at arms-length away.
- Get your rest
It’s so easy for us to skip this in advance of a trip, but this is the MOST important. Try making lists and packing early so you’re not burning the midnight oil days before your trip.
- Keep your go-to medicine handy
Many medicines come in travel sizes that meet security requirements. Load up your plastic zipper bag with the essentials so that if you need them they’re handy.
- Wash hands frequently and keep your kids from touching their eyes and mouth
Hand sanitizer is great in a pinch, but nothing gets the job done like soap and water!
- Stay hydrated
BYOB: Many airports are equipped with hydration stations where you can fill up your own water bottle after you clear security. You won’t have to worry about chugging water or throwing it away at the checkpoint if you bring your own reusable bottle. The best part is you can stay hydrated throughout your trip. My favorite for Laila is the Contigo Autoseal Trekker. It’s perfect for kids’ hands, fits in a backpack and the spill-proof lid seals between sips so we don’t have to worry about messes.
